MASHONALAND East Province is targeting to put 22 500 hectares under wheat this season, and already, more than 15 000ha have been planted.
The province is also optimistic about reaching the target. Agriculture and Rural Development Advisory Services acting provincial director Mr Calisto Masiwa toured some wheat farms in Marondera district to assess crop condition as well as meet farmers to hear their concerns and challenges.
In an interview with Zimpapers at Chiparawe Farm in Ward 23, Marondera, Mr Masiwa said he was impressed by the condition of the crop.
He also urged more farmers to continue planting wheat.
“I am assessing wheat farmers and we are really impressed by the crop that we saw here,” Mr Masiwa said.
“As a province, we are targeting 22 500ha and we have done three quarters of our target so far. We are happy that there has been movement of seed both from the Presidential Inputs Programme and also the irrigation programme that is being supported by Arda.
“Our message to wheat farmers for now is to quickly finish planting. So far, the farmers that we visited are doing well.”
