THE ruling Zanu-PF Mashonaland West provincial leadership has endorsed party leader and President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2018 harmonised elections.
This was after provincial secretary for administration Cde Simbarashe Ziyambi had proposed that the province endorses President Mnangagwa as the party’s president ahead of the December Congress during the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting held yesterday at party provincial offices in Chinhoyi.
Cde Ziyambi’s proposal was seconded by PEC executive member Cde Martha Munondo. Provincial chairman Cde Ephraim Chengeta said party members should be united ahead of next year’s elections.
“As a province, we should work tirelessly to ensure that we win 2018 elections resoundingly,” he said. Cde Chengeta said party members should learn from the 2008 elections, where the opposition party won a majority of seats in the House of Assembly.
“We should not have a repeat of the 2008 scenario. Hapana chinorwadza sekuti opposition itore zvigaro zvakati wandei (there is nothing as painful as allowing the opposition to win more seats),” he said. Cde Chengeta said party leadership should by all means explain the changes that have been happening in both Government and party to the electorate.
“There have been a lot of changes in both Government and the party. With less than seven to eight months ahead of the elections, it is our sole responsibility as party leadership to inform them about the changes as well as to convince the electorate to vote for us,” he said. Cde Chengeta also urged party leadership to continue mobilising people to vote as the province was on course to surpass its set target of registering 400 000 people.
“We have so far registered more than 300 000 people in the province and we are on course to surpass the provincial target of 400 000,” he said.
