Mashonaland West province has declared war against waste through the launch of a Zero-Waste Movement Chapter and the Clean Cities Competition.

The three-pronged campaign seeks to position the province for sustainable economic development.

Various stakeholders, including Government departments and parastatals, took part in the monthly clean-up before the launch of the Zero-Waste Movement and Clean Cities Competition.

Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo headlined the events designed to promote clean environments and sustainable development.

In support of the initiative, various organisations donated waste bins.

The launch of the provincial Zero-Waste Movement Chapter seeks to promote First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa’s drive for sustainable waste management.

The launch was running under the theme “The Globe is our Home – Zero Waste, My Responsibility”.

First Lady, Amai Mnangagwa signed the Global Zero Waste Goodwill Declaration, along with other First Ladies on the sidelines of the recent UN General Assembly.

“As Mashonaland Best Province, today we commit ourselves to ensuring the success of this declaration through unveiling the Provincial Committee,” she said.

The Committee will complement Local Authorities through championing resource and community mobilisation, up-scaling of recycling, education and awareness as well as a sustained refuse collection system.

Local authorities in the province are expected to compete in the Clean Cities Competition where those who excel in waste reduction and sustainable environmental management are recognised.

The competition seeks to foster innovation in waste management strategies and promote recycling initiatives.

Minister Chombo said Mashonaland West Province has the potential to become a model region for waste management.
