MASHONALAND Central Province is poised to issue 1 000 title deeds to A1 farmers, marking a major milestone in land ownership and security that bodes well for the agriculture landscape.
The initiative not only empowers local farmers, but also promises to bolster investment and growth within the sector, fostering a new era of agricultural prosperity.
This comes as the Government has undertaken extensive surveys, identifying 1 264 farms across the nation that are in the process of obtaining title deeds.
In an interview yesterday, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri said the process of issuing title deeds was underway.
“We are dedicated to ensuring that all categories of farmers receive their title deeds swiftly. The ongoing processing of 1 000 deeds specifically for Mashonaland Central is a testament to our commitment to empowering local farmers.”
The formal launch of the land tenure system by President Mnangagwa on December 28, 2024, set the groundwork for this progress. The system aims to grant full ownership to beneficiaries, facilitating family inheritance and establishing a robust land market.
Recently, Minister Masuka described the title deed issuance process as “automatic”, as it relies on a comprehensive database of landowners to streamline verification.
He underscored the Government’s determination to eliminate multiple farm ownership.
Zimbabwe National Farmers Union, president Mrs Monica Chinamasa praised the initiative and underscored the vital role of financial institutions in supporting farmers.
“This is a significant move,” she stated.
“However, we must raise awareness among small-scale farmers about the assistance available from banks in acquiring title deeds. It is essential that they understand the opportunities these deeds provide,” she said.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the initiative, one sticking issue is many small-scale farmers must address boundary issues to secure their title deeds.
Mrs Chinamasa said there is need to resolve the challenges.
“We need to ensure that every farmer is empowered to claim their rightful ownership.”
The outreach programmes that accompany this initiative represent a substantial step toward empowering farmers in Zimbabwe. Farmers are taught how they can access mortgage loans and secure title deeds, enhancing their financial stability. As the agricultural sector prepares for a potentially fruitful season, this momentum is essential.
