Masike releases new music video

Showbiz Reporter
Afro-fusion singer Hope Masike has had a stellar start to 2016, if her recent Kora nomination and Nama ‘Outstanding Video’ Award are anything to go by. To top that up, barely a week after her Nama win, Masike released an original and impressionistic video for her track, Ndinewe, and immediately got her social media platforms swamped with compliments from fans and critics alike.

The four-minute video was directed by Charles Mawungwa, who is the winning director for Hope Masike’s Nama winning video, Huyai Tinamate.

Shot in one day at the Tswatography Studio in Harare, Hope cleverly played around with graphics to convey her message, as was the case in her 2015 award-winning production, Huyai Tinamate.

The video is a colourful play at contrasts between yellow and black, creating an aesthetically pleasant world. It starts on a rather dark and depressing note with Masike caged, chained and lifelessly dressed as a destitute, a clever play at bondage, slavery or perhaps poverty. Cages and chains are used to reveal the struggles that people face but when one reaches out to their source of hope, like a phoenix from the ashes, they arise and conquer.

The intro alone gets one hooked as the smooth mbira tone, followed by the scintillating lead guitar which leads to the vocals shows clarity in the artist’s mind to bring out the best sound.

As the song progresses, it gets brighter and happier climaxing with the jovial Chinyambera dancing by Hope herself plus the four dancers.

By yesterday, the video had close to 4,000 views on Youtube.

It remains to be seen if Ndinewe will fare better than Huyai Tinamate – a Mbira-gospel song from her second album, which earned her a Kora All Africa awards nomination for Best Traditional Female Artist.

The same track was adjudged the best video at the Namas, beating Jah Prayzah’s Jerusarema.
