Masiya wins ZLGU Open

TEENAGE golf sensation Miriam Masiya was crowned the 2024 National Aids Council Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union Open stroke play champion at Chapman Golf Club yesterday.

The 15-year-old Form Two student managed to dominate both the juniors and open sections after she carded rounds of 78, 80, 75, and 77 to take the crown.

Masiya was happy with her win and attributed it to hard work and practice.

“I am very happy with my first win and I am looking forward to continue doing well. I am grateful to my father and coach Richard who has been pushing me hard.

“I started the competition on a high note and managed to maintain my composure throughout the four rounds. I had a little bit of pressure but managed to do well.

“As my first win, I am now looking forward to winning more tournaments in both the juniors and championship divisions.

“I started to play golf some two years back and I am looking forward to turning professional in the future. I am happy to have represented my club Royal Harare so well,” said Masiya.

Zarina Makwarimba was second with scores of 81, 72, 86, and 77 and Letwin Ncube was third on scores of 82, 70, 89, and 77.

The A division was won by Momo Mlalazi who had rounds of 94, 77, 95, and 79. Chochorayi Chagweda won the B division.

The guest of honour, Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora applauded sponsors National Aids Council and all the partners for supporting women’s golf in the country.

ZLGU president Olivia Nyamwanza was happy with the tournament and is looking forward to more competitive tournaments.

“We are happy to have managed to host such a high-profile tournament, which saw some foreign players taking part. We are grateful to NAC for allowing us to host the tournament.

“As ZLGU we are happy that we managing to have a new champion every year and I am happy for upcoming junior golfer Masiya who dominated the tournament. The event was a success considering that we had players from Zambia and South Africa.

“We are looking forward to having more tournaments,” said Nyamwanza.
