AFRICA has secured a place among global leaders in artificial intelligence computing after a Cassava Technologies supercomputer based in Cape Town was ranked 36th on the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful computing systems.
The supercomputer, named ‘Mufungi’ by Cassava Technologies co-founder Strive Masiyiwa, is powered by NVIDIA and is now fully operational.
Mufungi is a Shona word meaning “one who thinks.”
The ranking places the system within the top 50 globally, marking a major milestone for the continent’s digital transformation.
The investment comes at a time when governments, industry and researchers are increasingly seeking access to high-performance computing capacity needed to develop and deploy AI systems.
High-performance computing is critical for training AI models, processing large datasets and developing applications in sectors including healthcare, financial services, agriculture, education and scientific research.
Cassava said the system is serving both African and international clients.
By bringing advanced computing capacity closer to African users, the company is expected to lower barriers to AI development and reduce reliance on infrastructure located outside the continent.
