AMATEUR golfer Tonderai Masunga is continuously establishing himself as one of the leading players after he won the Midlands Amateur Championships at Gweru Golf Club over the weekend.
Masunga, an upcoming amateur golfer from Wingate Park, is now the man to beat in events that attract the country’s top amateurs.
The golfer also won in Zvishavane.
Masunga started the event on a low note and was in fourth place after trailing Thembelani Vundhla after the zero handicap player had an opening round of 74.
The first two round saw Masunga grossing one-over-par 145 with scores of 74 and 71before he carded 73 on Saturday to come out tops and take the championship.
The event was reduced to a 54-hole tournament instead of the 72 holes usually played.
Vundhla settled for second place with scores of 70, 75 and 74 for a total 219.
Another promising young player Stuart Krog was third while Visitor Mapwanya was fourth after carding 73, 75 and 75.
Kiren Vincent finished fifth with Ben Follet-Smith in sixth place as he continued to struggle to match the standards he set before he left for the United States.
