The Zimbabwean music industry continues to grow as new artistes are being discovered.
The latest is Lovemore Masunungure, a musical enthusiast and song writer, who focuses on liberation music.
“I am a military person and am married,” he said. “My music can be referred to as liberation music (Chimurenga music).”
The musical enthusiast has various role models and he appreciates their music.
“Wenje has always been my idol and I appreciate the type of music that he sings,” he said. “I can’t fail to mention Chivaviro and Pastor Haisa. The type of music that they sing is what I believe is my type of music. Those are my role models.
“In terms of gospel music I would like to appreciate the role of Reverend Chivaviro and Pastor Haisa.”
Masunungure said his role model was his late mother. He was raised in a traditional family.
“I would actually want to say that my late mother was my inspirer and biggest role model,” he said. “I grew up in a family that was into traditional music.”
Masunungure believes that music is a way of communication and his children are interested in music too.
“My children like music and some of them did music at school,” he said. “Music for me is a means of communication. I am an admirer of great communicators in this world. Music adds my voice disseminating what I believe. I can say we all agree that through music we can communicate.”
Masunungure said fitting in the music industry as a new comer was the challenge he faced.
“I wouldn’t say I have challenges and I will say naturally in arts industry people can’t accept your music when you are just beginning, when you are trying to fit in the industry,” he said.
Masunungure said for him, music was a means of communication not a career.
“I haven’t chosen music as a career, but as a way to communicate the things I believe in,” he said. “I believe in Africans coming together to develop their countries. And in this particular case I believe as Zimbabweans we must come together to develop our country.”
Masunungure has recorded some tracks and is working towards producing an album.
“I have done some core songs and am trying to work in order to have an album,” he said. “There is a song called ”Ariko” which talks about God, but I will be talking about that song in the context of our local politics.”
Masunungure has produced several tracks.
“There is also the gospel song called ”Ndinewe” that I did with my daughter which is purely an Anglican Church hymn,” he said. “Shumba yeNhorondo”, that is about our President and his totem is shumba.”
“Therefore, we say he isn’t a person who came from nowhere to lead this country, but we know him as a person from history when he took the decision to join the liberation struggle.
“By God’s plan we have him as the leader of the country. And we can see what he is doing in terms of developing this country. ”
“Huya Tivake” track, it’s a song to rally the country behind the leadership of the President,” he said. “Generations will come and there will be a person leading the process of developing the country at any given time.
“In this song we are calling upon everyone either black or white and what ever political orientation, religion whether you are a Zimbabwean outside the country or within, let’s come together to build this country.”
