ZIFA Eastern division side, Masvingo United say there is no way they cannot win the championship and return to the Premier Soccer League at the end of the 2020 season.
The team coach, Godfrey “Mai Mahofa” Dondo is confident that the season belongs to the team which played premiership football at the turn of the millennium.
He said they have all the ammunition to compete for honours in the coming season if their form towards the end of the 2019 season is anything to go by.
Dondo said his charges managed to win the Manica Diamonds Cup game after beating log leaders and eventual winners of the league title, Tenax FC last season.
“We have what it takes to win the Zifa Eastern region Division One league this season. We have quality players who can compete for honours, as they have demonstrated last season,” said Dondo.
“Since I took over from Ezekiel Mutoda who threw in the towel with 12 games to spare, I won eight games and drew two. This means I was unbeaten and managed to take the team from position four to three. I am confident that despite the financial challenges that the team faces now, we are going to return to the elite league, come end of 2020 season,” he said.
Dondo who is also former defence stalwart for the same team and also credited for helping Zvishavane FC Platinum gain promotion into the PSL said Masvingo football fans were itching for PSL matches, a feat he says is attainable.
He said what is needed is for people to be united towards one objective, “From ordinary supporters, stakeholders and potential sponsors.”
“Like any other team in the league, we are facing financial challenges but that will not deter us from returning to where we belong. We are working towards bringing back smiles on our fans’ faces and with support our desire to bring back glory days at our home ground, Mucheke Stadium will come to pass,” he said.
Meanwhile, the original owners of Masvingo United, Mhunga family have hinted that something was brewing behind the scenes and Masvingo United could get a sponsor.
Family spokesperson, Godwin Tanda Taruva said they were considering rekindling their romance with the team that once made them a household name and the aim was to gain PSL status once more.
“Something is brewing and it’s around Masvingo United. We will announce what we are planning at the right time. What the community, especially football lovers, should know is that we are doing something to bring back PSL in Masvingo,” said Tandataruva without shedding more light.
If the team gets a sponsor it could be good news as it’s surviving on the benevolence of well wishers and operating without a budget.
