Masvingo begin 2014 Youth Games preps

Senior Sports Reporter
MASVINGO Province have started  preparing to host the 2014 Zimbabwe National Youth Games with the Local Organising Committee set to be inducted on 18 September. The Games are returning to the country’s oldest city which held the games in 2004, a year after the inaugural games in Bulawayo.
“We have already met as a way of sharing information in terms of what is expected from us as the host province,” said the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) southern region manager Isaiah Mpofu.

He said during their first meeting they also briefly discussed the issue of possible venues as well as the modalities of roping in various stakeholders like churches, chiefs, the corporate world as well as members of the public.

“The process of identifying the Local Organising Committee has also started but they will be officially announced at the induction workshop where we will also induct the Masvingo Province Sports Development Committee,” said Mpofu.

The Masvingo Sports Development Committee will be responsible for spearheading preparations and running of the games.
Having come out as the second best province at the just-ended Youth Games in Bulawayo, the 2014 hosts look forward to grabbing their second games title after their first in 2004 when they were the hosts.

Masvingo collected 10 gold, nine silver and three bronze medals while Bulawayo cruised to a well deserved victory with 16 gold, 12 silver and the same number of bronze medals at the games that ended Harare’s monopoly of the winners’ podium.
Harare could only manage eight gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze medals to finish fourth.

It will be a hectic sporting year for the southern region as it will be playing host to the Zone Six Games that will be held in Bulawayo in December next year.
