Two people were killed while five others were seriously injured when a South African registered vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred at the 249km peg near Matshiloni area at around 7PM.

National police spokesman Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said yesterday the vehicle was travelling towards Beitbridge with six passengers on board.

He said the injured were rushed to Beitbridge District Hospital while the bodies were taken to the same hospital’s mortuary.

“The vehicle was travelling towards Beitbridge with six passengers on board.

“When it reached the 249km peg the driver lost control and it veered off the road and overturned,” he said.

Chief Supt Nyathi said two passengers died on the spot from head injuries while five others including the driver sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Beitbridge District Hospital.

Sources at the Beitbridge District Hospital said last night that one person had been transferred to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) while two others were taken to Musina Hospital in South Africa by their relatives.

The Tuesday deaths bring to 21 the number of people who have died in road accidents along the same road in less than a month.

Recently 19 people were killed when a South Africa bound Mercedes sprinter they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a Hino truck near Lion and Elephant Motel along the same road.
