The City of Masvingo has initiated efforts to rehabilitate and restore non-functional street lights across key areas within its central business district and residential suburbs.
This follows concerns by residents about the increase in robberies at night due to the absence of streetlights.
In a statement, City of Masvingo spokesperson Ms Ashleigh Jinjika, said the initiative includes ongoing maintenance, replacement of damaged infrastructure and exploring sustainable solutions such as solar-powered street lighting to improve coverage and reliability.
“Public safety remains top priority for council and council recognises that adequate street lighting plays a critical role in crime prevention, visibility and overall community confidence,” she said.
“While street lighting alone may not be the sole cause of criminal activity, its absence can create conditions conducive to opportunistic crimes.”
Ms Jinjika urged residents to continue reporting faulty street lights and suspicious activities through the city’s communication channels.
