THE recently-opened Masvingo High Court will operate full time starting September this year, after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) appointed two judges to try cases in the province.
JSC secretary Justice Rita Makarau said Justice Garainesu Mawadze and Justice Joseph Mafusire had been appointed resident judges at the court.
Masvingo High Court had not been hearing cases regularly since its official opening by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa in May.
The court, however, was used immediately after its opening during the second quarter circuit sittings when Justice Joseph Musakwa presided over seven cases.
“Normal High Court sessions in Masvingo will commence on September 1 following the appointment of the two judges,” said Justice Makarau.
She said the office of the Master of the High Court was, however, fully-operational from the time the High Court was opened in May with people from Masvingo getting assistance.
“People from Masvingo are visiting the office to register their deeds of trustee. All deceased estate files from Masvingo which were dealt with in Harare will be transferred back to Masvingo so that people no longer have to travel long distances to the capital,” she said.
Plans are also afoot to build another resident High Court in Mutare within the next six months with JSC saying all provinces should have a resident High Court to improve citizens’ access to justice.
Last week Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku officially opened a modern magistrate’s court in Victoria Falls funded by the Royal Danish Embassy in conjunction with the JSC.
