A Zaka man allegedly axed his cousin leading to his death following a dispute over a goat.
Emmanuel Saravoyi (60) of Nemauko Village under Chief Ndanga allegedly struck Edias Futsirai (50) thrice – once on each jaw and once on the head on Thursday last week.
Futsirai sustained a deep cut on the head and was rushed to Musiso Hospital.
Due to the serious nature of his injuries, he was transferred to Masvingo General Hospital where he died three days after the attack.
Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dehwa said Futsirai’s body was taken to Masvingo Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
“I can confirm receiving a report of murder which occurred in Chief Ndanga’s area in Zaka where a man was killed over a missing goat. Police have arrested the accused and he is assisting with investigations. He will appear in court soon, facing a murder charge,” said Asst Insp Dehwa.
He said on Thursday at around 7AM Mr David Machine Yeuchidzai (63) of Taremba Village discovered that one of his goats was missing in the pen. He decided to search for the animal.
The acting police spokesperson said Mr Yeuchidzai passed by Saravoyi’s homestead in Nemauko Village and spotted a goat similar to his.
Asst Insp Dehwa said Mr Yeuchidzai informed Futsirai, cousin to Saravoyi that he had spotted a goat similar to his at the accused’s homestead.
Mr Yeuchidzai, said Asst Insp Dehwa, teamed up with five villagers to confront Saravoyi.
He said Saravoyi refused to let the villagers search his homestead for the goat.
“Saravoyi got into his kitchen hut, took an axe and charged towards Futsirai. Sensing danger, Futsirai took to his heels but he unfortunately fell down and was left at the assailant’s mercy.
Saravoyi allegedly struck Futsirai on both jaws and once on the head leaving him with a deep cut,” he said.
Asst Insp Dehwa said villagers rushed Futsirai to Musiso Hospital where he was transferred to Masvingo General Hospital due to his deteriorating condition.
A report was made to the police leading to Saravoyi’s arrest on assault charges.
Futsirai died on Sunday at around 3 AM while still admitted to Masvingo General Hospital.— @walterbmswazie2.
