Masvingo receives $400 million devolution war chest

Government has to date splurged nearly $400 million to local authorities across Masvingo province under devolution in a move that has transformed rural areas in line with Second Republic’s rural development strategy.

 

The money was released to nine local authorities in the province which comprise of seven rural local authorities and two urban ones.

 

Government allocated a whopping $1,85 billion for local authorities in Masvingo under devolution in 2021.

 

Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira disclosed the bulk of the funding went towards upgrading the sewer and water recirculation in Masvingo City and Chiredzi Town.

 

Masvingo City is the province capital while Chiredzi is the industrial capital thanks largely to the sugar cane industry.

 

According to Minister Chadzamira some of the devolution funds had been channeled to rehabilitate the Alko-Towla Road in Mwenezi.

 

Building materials for ongoing clinic and schools construction projects in Zaka,Gutu,Chitedzi rural,Chivi and Bikita had also chewed a huge chunk of the disbursed funds.

 

Devolution funding has immensely transformed the socio-economic face of the province with major inroads made in the spheres of health,education and roads mainly in remote rural areas.
