MASVINGO ROAD CARNAGE: Police identify victims

TRAGEDY struck along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road when  seven people were killed in a horrific three-vehicle pile up at the 179-kilometre peg on 12 September 2025.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released the names of the victims, who were identified by their families.

Among the deceased are:
• Leopold Mudiwakure (43) of Waterfalls, Harare, the driver of a Toyota Aqua.
• Fortune Eddington Chitsaka (21) of Waterfalls, Harare.
• Sithembiso Bhegedhe, also of Waterfalls, Harare.
• Danson Chidewu, the driver of a Toyota Dyna truck, from Unit J, Seke, Chitungwiza.
• Martin Mazhata (41) of Vembe Village, Chief Chaminuka, Gweru.
• Takudzwa Masanganise (35) of Zowa Farm, Zvimba.

Police confirmed that a seventh victim, a male adult who was a passenger in the Toyota Dyna truck, is yet to be identified. His body is being kept at Masvingo Provincial Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.
Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, expressed sorrow over the loss of lives.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” he said in a statement.
He also urged motorists to take extra care on the country’s roads.

“We appeal to drivers to seriously consider road safety while travelling,” Commissioner Nyathi warned.
The crash comes amid rising concerns about road safety along the busy Masvingo-Beitbridge highway, where speeding and reckless driving have been blamed for numerous fatalities.
