MATABELELAND North Province is targeting to raise $40,000 at the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Independence Ball.
The Minister’s Ball is meant to raise funds to be donated to local charity organisations and is traditionally held on April 17, the eve of Independence Day.
Provincial Administrator, Latiso Dlamini, said finer details of the ball will be availed after next week’s meeting. The Ball will be held at the Edmund Davies Hall in Hwange.
“Our target is $40,000 but that includes donations in cash and kind. We met with District Administrators from all districts and Chief Executive Officers from all local authorities. Our next meeting is next week after the Easter Holiday that is when we will give details about the Minister’s Ball.
“For now, we can’t say how much our tickets will cost because we don’t want to scare people. Usually the tickets do not cost much,” said Dlamini.
Committees such as resource mobilisation and fundraising have already been set as preparations for the annual event gather momentum.
Dlamini said resource mobilisation was, however, progressing at a snail’s pace.
“Things are a bit on the tougher side. People are showing interest, they have been pledging but the pace at which pledges and donations are coming is slow. People are saying they are not getting money but they really want to donate. We will see as we progress. It has always been the case everyyear that donations and most of the stuff gather momentum on the last minute,” the Provincial Administrator said.
She said however, despite the slow start, preparations were on course.
The provincial Independence Day celebrations will be held at Somhlolo Stadium in Lupane where the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Ambassador Cain Mathema, is expected to read President Mugabe’s speech.
