MATABELELAND North province is today (Wednesday) hosting a winter wheat seminar at the Mhlahlandlela Government Complex in Bulawayo, with stakeholders expected to map strategies for increasing national grain production.
The seminar, which will feature a keynote address by Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services chief director Medlinah Magwenzi, has brought together Agritex officers, farmers and key players in the agriculture sector.
Discussions are expected to focus on the current state of wheat production in Zimbabwe, with particular emphasis on Matabeleland North province, while also addressing enabling factors and production bottlenecks affecting farmers.

In her welcome remarks, Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary Sithandiwe Ncube urged participants to strengthen collaborative efforts to secure critical agricultural resources and ensure that national production targets are met.
“Last season we recorded increased hectarage and impressive yields. This year we are aiming even higher, targeting 3 000 hectares nationally, with a strong focus on utilising our water bodies and improving agronomic practices to achieve yields of between six and seven tonnes per hectare,” she said.
Ms Ncube challenged farmers to adhere to technical guidance from extension officers and remain prepared for the winter cropping season to maximise productivity.
The seminar comes at a time when the Government is intensifying efforts to boost wheat production as part of wider strategies to improve national food security and reduce reliance on imports.
