THERE is so much excitement in Matabeleland North as schools in the province brace for the inter-district matches of the on-going National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Proton-Surrey 20 and Under boys’ tournament.
Bulawayo Province will play host to the finals on October 6 and Matabeleland North which has over the years not done well, is promising to do better this year.
The province’s district representatives have all said they adequately prepared for the tournament hence there will be stiff competition.
Nkayi District will host the inter-district competition and Somvubu High School will represent Bubi District while Hwange High School will represent Hwange District.
Nkayi as the host district will have two teams and these are Komayanga Secondary School and Nkayi High.
Other participants are Manjolo High (Binga), Dinyane (Tsholotsho) and Madlelenyoi Secondary (Umguza) and the defending champions Gloag High.
In an interview, the province’s Nash head in charge of football, Khumbulani Sibanda expressed excitement at the prospect of hosting the games at Nkayi High School.
“The Proton and Surrey tournament Matabeleland North district games will be held at Nkayi High School. We are glad to say that there is so much excitement in the area as this is the biggest football tournament that has ever come to this part of the province.
“All the school teams representing the districts are ready for the challenge. This time around we have schools that have never had a chance to play at such a stage.
“Our hope is that the players see a bigger picture of using the tournament to showcase their talent,” said Sibanda.
Meanwhile, in Bulawayo, district champions will play at Gifford High School grounds.
The headmaster in charge of football in Bulawayo, Christopher Dube confirmed that all was set for the competition.
“All roads lead to Gifford High School and we expect a tight contest. Everyone is invited to come and witness the action,” said Dube.
In Matabeleland South, Mtshabezi will be the hosts.
