Police in Matabeleland South have launched a provincial crime and traffic festive season campaign to ensure a safe, crime-free, and accident-free holiday period.

Teams have been deployed across the province to disseminate information as part of the crime awareness initiative.
Speaking at the launch in Gwanda, Officer Commanding Police Matabeleland South, Commissioner Steven Kazingizi, said measures have been put in place to increase police presence throughout the province.

“We are holding this crime and traffic awareness campaigns to ensure a crime and accident-free holiday period. During the festive season, there is an increase of activities as members of the public prepare to partake in Christmas celebrations. People travel from across the border back into the country and those in the country visit relatives, friends and holiday resorts.

“This results in traffic accidents leading to loss of precious lives. We have realised that accidents are a result of factors like over-speeding, drunken driving, unroadworthy vehicles on the roads and human error. As the police we urge all motorists to exercise caution on the roads and drive to stay alive,” he said.
Commissioner Kazingizi added that police have intensified checks at roadblocks in partnership with the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.

He also urged public transport operators to refrain from overloading vehicles in an attempt to make extra cash, warning that overloaded vehicles will not be allowed to pass through roadblocks.

Commissioner Kazingizi shared traffic and crime awareness tips for citizens to follow in order to reduce crime and remain safe during the festive season.
