Matabeleland Swimming Board has announced a 63-strong squad set to represent the province at the Senior National Championships scheduled for Harare next month.

The team was selected during the Matabeleland Championships held at the beginning of the month.

Alan Bruce will coach the side with Crusaders’ Courtney McAllister captaining the girls while Penguins’ Mmelwa Netsha is leading the boys.

Next year’s national senior championships are going to be tightly contested as swimmers would be fighting for a place in the Zimbabwe team that would represent the country at the Africa Swimming Confederation (Cana) Region 4 Championships to be held in Bulawayo in February next year. Over 10 countries are expected to take part in the annual event.

More local swimmers have a chance of making it into the squad as the country would not be constrained by travelling and accommodation costs that have previously forced the Aquatic Union of Zimbabwe sending lean delegations to other countries.

This year it was held in Beau Bassin, Mauritius.

Swimmers that made the cut include in-form Liam O’Hara of Falcon, Penguins’ Denilson Cyprianos, Barracudas’ Cory Werret and Maryke Koen of Crusaders who all set new records in various events this year.
