MATCHA, the green tea powder, boasts a rich and storied history that stretches back centuries. Once a ceremonial drink reserved for spiritual rituals, it has evolved into a globally beloved beverage, cherished for both its distinctive flavour and its impressive health benefits. Today, matcha is enjoyed in homes and cafés around the world, including right here in Bulawayo at our own shop, So Sweet.
The journey of matcha began in ancient China during the Tang dynasty, between 618 and 907 AD. At that time, tea leaves were steamed and compressed into bricks to make them easier to transport and store. To prepare the tea, people would roast and grind the leaves into a fine powder, which they then whisked with hot water and salt. This method of preparation was later adopted by Japanese Buddhist monks, who brought it back to Japan in the 12th century. It was in Japan that matcha truly found its spiritual and cultural home.
In Japan, matcha became deeply intertwined with Zen Buddhist practices. Monks used the powdered tea to enhance their meditation, appreciating its ability to promote both alertness and calm. Over time, the Japanese refined the cultivation and preparation of matcha, leading to the development of the revered tea ceremony known as chanoyu. This ritual, steeped in symbolism and tradition, emphasises harmony, respect, purity, and tranquillity. It remains a cornerstone of Japanese culture, celebrating the art of preparing and serving matcha with grace and mindfulness.
Although matcha remained a traditional part of Japanese life for centuries, its global popularity surged in the early 21st century. As interest in health and wellness grew, so did awareness of matcha’s remarkable nutritional profile. Rich in antioxidants — particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) — and containing L-theanine, an amino acid known to foster a relaxed yet focused state, matcha quickly gained favour among health-conscious consumers.
Today, matcha is no longer confined to ceremonial settings. It has become a versatile ingredient found in everything from lattes and smoothies to ice cream and baked goods. Its earthy flavour and green hue have made it a favourite among food enthusiasts and wellness seekers alike. At So Sweet in Bulawayo, we are proud to serve this delicious and nourishing drink.
