LEADING Zimbabwean Badminton player Thabani Mathe is set to take his preparations for the upcoming local and international competitions to the United Arab Emirates.
Mathe will be in the UAE for a two-week training camp as part of preparation in his bid to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris, France.
The 25-year-old will leave the country tomorrow for Dubai where he will be training with top international players for the next two weeks under the New Vision Badminton Academy.
Mathe is hoping to defend his Zimbabwe Badminton Open championship title and also to battle for gold at the Best Shot Open Tournament that will be held from July 9 to 10 at Sunrise Sports Club in Harare.
Internationally, Mathe is also gearing for the Mauritius Badminton International Open tournament that will take place from July 18 to 23 and the Badminton Reunion Open Tournament set for July 26 to 30 in Madagascar.
Speaking ahead of his departure, Mathe said the tour will provide him with the much-needed international exposure as he seeks to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games set for France.
“I have been focusing a lot on off-court activities since training in Dubai will solely be covering the on-court aspect.
“I’m feeling very confident about the course that I am embarking on to achieve my goals, one of which is progressing up the ladder in the Badminton Continental and World rankings for a spot in the 2024 Olympics games.
“The knowledge and experience I will get from all these tours will add value to my game, on top of putting the country on the world map.
“I hope that with the experience and exposure I’ve attained over the years, a piece of silverware or two will be on the cards upon my return,” said Mathe.
