MATABELELAND Rugby Football Board (MRFB) will tomorrow hold an extra-ordinary meeting whose agenda is to vote for a substantive leadership. Last year the board passed a vote of no confidence in Wayne Robinson and his executive and voted for Nkosana Maphuma to assume chairman’s post until the next elections.
Robinson’s executive board had Tapiwa Mangezi as the vice-chairman, treasurer Tino Ganiwa and secretary-general only identified as Lauren.
Old Miltonians’ Theo Weale was later elevated to the position of interim chairman, replacing Maphuma. Other members of the interim executive include Cheetahs’ coach Gilbert Nyamutsamba who assumed the treasurer’s role, secretary-general Thabani Tabukwa, committee members Emmanuel Mukandi and Arthur Mathe.
Weale said they decided to call for elections tomorrow so that they restore normalcy to the board.
“I believe that after coming in as an interim board after seeing that there were no activities we managed to get the sport up and running again. I think we’ve done our part because now the sport is being played on a regular basis and because we don’t want to overstay our welcome. We’ve decided to call for elections on Sunday. The clubs and other MRFB stakeholders will vote for the substantive leadership and our wish is to see passionate people coming into office and making sure that the sport is played. These positions should be for dedicated and committed people,” said Weale.
Some of the events spearheaded by Weale’s interim executive include the Bulawayo Cup which included teams from Masvingo and Gweru, Lois Corbi Festival, the Under-21 Cup, the Independence Cup and the league which is underway.
Weale said representatives from the four Bulawayo clubs, Nash and Naph heads in charge of rugby, the referee’s chairman and MRFB life members will vote for the new executive.
