DEFENDING Zimbabwe National Youth Games handball champions Matabeleland South girls team opened their title defence on a positive note with a 7-5 win over Matabeleland North at Northlea High School yesterday. The team is in Pool B along with Matabeleland North, Mashonaland Central and Manicaland. Mashonaland Central won 9-7 against Manicaland.
In the boys category, hosts Bulawayo had a good start as well beating Masvingo 20-6 while Midlands beat Mashonaland Central 15-10 in Pool A.
In Pool B Manicaland played to an 8-8 draw with Mashonaland West while Mashonaland Central crushed Matabeleland North 23-7. Matabeleland North look set to be the punching bags.
In the other girls handball match, Bulawayo recorded 14-9 and 12-5 wins over Mashonaland East and Midlands provinces respectively.
In girls basketball Bulawayo pummelled Mashonaland Central 107-7 in their first match.
Mashonaland West beat Mashonaland East 38-32, while Harare thumped Matabeleland South 71-16.
In the boys category Bulawayo lost 51-52 to Midlands but the boys remained confident of a comeback.
Girls soccer played at Barbourfields Stadium outside grounds saw hosts Bulawayo open their account with a 3-3 draw against Manicaland.
Rebecca Mandaza, Sibonginkosi Nleya and Siphiwe Dube scored for the host province with Rachel Mutsaneki, Tamuka and Petronella Sithole scoring for Manicaland.
