A 36-year-old man from Matobo has been jailed for 15 years at Gwanda Magistrate’s court for waylaying and raping a 13-year-old juvenile last month.
The man chased after the girl while on his bicycle after seeing her coming from a friend’s home, where they had been discussing homework.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the offence was committed on June 8 this year, around 3 pm.
“The victim went to a friend’s homestead to do some homework and while on her way back home, she met the offender who started chasing her with a bicycle until he caught up with her,” said the NPAZ.
“The offender pushed the victim and she fell on the ground and then he sat on top of her. She screamed for help and the offender produced a knife, threatening to kill her.”
He raped the girl before fleeing from the scene on his bicycle.
The girl told her parents about the ordeal and they reported the case to the police, leading to the man’s arrest.
“This case highlights the importance of creating safe spaces for children to speak and ensuring that they are protected, especially within homes and communities. Justice begins with listening and acting. Let us break the silence and stand up for the safety and dignity of every child,” said the NPAZ.
