A Form Three pupil at Matopo High School died in the early hours of Saturday morning after reportedly falling ill.
The pupil died at Matopo Clinic after he was rushed there from the school’s hostel.
Sources said the learner had complained of a headache a day before his death. A few hours before he passed away, he reportedly walked from his hostel to another hostel, where he attempted to sleep.
Other pupils later alerted the boarding master after noticing that he was not responding.
Efforts to wake him up were unsuccessful, prompting them to rush him to the local clinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Matopo High School headmaster Gardson Sibanda confirmed the death in an official statement issued to parents.
When contacted for comment, Sibanda said he was in a meeting and was not available to respond to questions.
A parent, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed shock over the pupil’s death, saying it had left the school community traumatised.
“On 4 July 2024, the boys’ hostel was gutted by fire, and I am told that the boy who passed away was among those who escaped from the burning hostel. Now he is gone.
“Our children are still shocked that one of them has gone forever. As a parent, it is not easy. Imagine, every parent was busy preparing for a school visit, only for one to receive a call that their child had passed on,” said the parent.
The pupil’s body was collected early on Saturday morning, while investigations into the cause of death are underway.
Post-mortem results are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding his death.
