MATOPO Sailing Club on the outskirts of Bulawayo has been the talk of the town for the past few months as it is the ultimate venue for those who want to relax, enjoy drinks and a braai with friends and family on weekends.
The spot has become a hive of activity since the onset of the festive season with locals making a bee line to the joint every weekend.
A 34KM drive from Bulawayo along the Matopos road will get you to the club. When one drives in, they are greeted by a scenic view of a dam that is over 300 meters away from the entrance. The dam was constructed for sailing purposes by its predecessors, but is now used by guests for paid canoe rides.
Cars are parked close to the dam and people pull out their camping chairs to relax. Guests are free to play music from their cars. A bar is conveniently located near the braai area for patrons’ convenience. It is small and intimate with a pool table.
The braai area has a sitting spot for guests to enjoy their assortment of meat under the shade of trees, while viewing the dam.
Next week, the Sailing Club will be hosting a BBQ Summer Fest with five DJs from the United Kingdom. The DJs, Sox, Mdast, Omelette, Sparks and Teezy will be supported by local DJs Willz, Tawaz, Twist, Mast, Crazy Flavah and Big C.
Organiser of the show, Nyasha “Swizzle” Magasa, said the fiesta was a way of welcoming those from the Diaspora who want to enjoy a party atmosphere in the bush.
“We have a lot of people who are coming down to Zimbabwe from the UK. So we decided to use Zimbabwean DJs based in the UK to liven up the party at the joint,” Magasa said.
Swizzle said the party would start at 12AM and end at 11PM.
“Cooler boxes are allowed into the venue with $5 charged per cooler box. People will be expected to pay $2 per head to enter the joint,” he said.
