Matopos 33 Miler race date set

THE annual PPC Matopos 33-Miler Ultra-Marathon will be held on April 12, an official said yesterday.

The competition which was re-introduced three years ago after a long sabbatical, is sponsored to the tune of $10, 000. The marathon was over the years used to prepare for the Comrades Marathon.

The course has been measured and certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and this has raised the status of the marathon to being a Qualifying Event for international races including the Comrades.

Njombo Lekula, PPC Zimbabwe managing director said the winners in both women and men will each pocket $750.

Last year’s winners of the race were Charles Soza in the men’s category with Monica Kativhu successfully defending her title.

Lekula said: “This year we expect a bigger race with more entrants and more participation from people at various fitness levels. There is the Ultra-Marathon which is 53km, the 21 km Half-Marathon and the relay race. There is also the 5km race for those who would like a more laid back walking or jogging experience. We are encouraging families to take part as we have a race for every age and fitness level.”

Registration for the race is already underway, with pre-registration closing on April 10.

For one to compete in the race, they have to pay $10 for the Ultra-Marathon, $50 for relays and $5 for the Fun Run.

Meanwhile, Lekula said plans are at an advanced stage to have a similar competition in Harare.

“As you might well be aware, PPC Zimbabwe is expanding and spreading its wings to the Northern side of Zimbabwe and with that in mind we are looking at growing the PPC Ultra-Marathon brand to reflect our vision. Our plans are therefore underway to hold an Ultra Marathon in Harare in the upcoming year.”
