ZIMBABWE’S representatives at this year’s International Pairs World Golf Championship, Samson Mavunga and Tadeus Lazaro, say they’re ready to make the country proud as the tournament tees off this morning at the San International Golf Course in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

The global event, now in its second year, is being hosted in Africa for the first time after last year’s inaugural women’s edition in Spain.

Mavunga and Lazaro were seen off at their title sponsors Sterling Group of Hotels in Harare on Friday, both confident of a strong showing.

“We’re extremely happy to represent the country at such a prestigious tournament,” said Mavunga.

“This opportunity allows us to connect with players from different parts of the world. We’re grateful to Sterling Group of Hotels for their support and looking forward to doing well. The qualifiers were tough, but I’m glad my partner Lazaro helped me a lot, especially with his five consecutive birdies on our way to winning the sole ticket. After the women came fourth last year, we’re looking to improve on that.”

The final qualifying round was held at Mutola Golf Club in Mhondoro-Ngezi, drawing 152 golfers from 30 clubs across the country.

Sterling Group of Hotels executive director Wilbert Manyika said they were proud to back the pair’s participation in the global showpiece.

“I’m happy we’ve gathered to see off this year’s representatives for the annual pairs golf championship,” said Manyika.

“As Sterling Group of Hotels, we found it important to support this sport as a way of giving back to the community and fulfilling our corporate social responsibility.”

The Sterling Group of Hotels partnered with Albatros Golf Company, the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, Art Effects, and VTU Platinum Lodge from Mhondoro to support the team.
