MUSICIAN Mavusani, acclaimed dance outfit Iyasa and songstress Sandra Ndebele are set to join a star-studded line-up at the inaugural Munhumutapa Day Musical Gala at Mvurwi Stadium this evening.
The gala, which begins at 6pm, forms part of celebrations for the first-ever Munhumutapa Day, a new public holiday commemorating Zimbabwe’s rich history, culture and heritage.
President Mnangagwa last week proclaimed September 15 a public holiday to be known as Munhumutapa Day through Statutory Instrument 148 of 2026 under the Public Holidays and Prohibition of Business Act.
The musical gala will provide a platform for artistes from Zimbabwe and across the region to celebrate the occasion through music, dance and cultural expression.
Mavusani, Iyasa and Sandra Ndebele will share the stage with Botswana’s Vee Mampeezy, Alick Macheso, Freeman, Sugar Sugar, Enzo Ishall, Killer T, the Charambas and Mathias Mhere.
The line-up also features Chief Hwenje, Peter Moyo, Sulumani Chimbetu, Seh Calaz, Dorcas Moyo, Onismo, Jah Prayzah, Andy Muridzo, Ndunge Yut and Jnr Spragga, among others.
For the Matabeleland-based artistes, the gala presents an opportunity to showcase the region’s vibrant talent on a national stage during a historic celebration.
Mavusani said he was looking forward to being part of the event and promised a memorable performance befitting the occasion.
“There is nothing more special and important than having to perform at the Munhumutapa Day musical gala, which also coincides with President Mnangagwa’s birthday. I will bring my A game as always.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish the President a happy birthday and to more prosperous years of leading Zimbabwe into an upper middle-income society,” he said.
Iyasa director Nkululeko Dube said the group had prepared thoroughly for the gala and would use the platform to showcase Zimbabwe’s artistic excellence.
“We as Iyasa always bring out our best. We take each opportunity as a chance to show how dynamic and talented our artists are and this is not going to be any different. People should look forward to another special and well-packaged show. We have prepared well and we are more than confident that the people will appreciate and enjoy the performance,” said Dube.
The gala is expected to provide a fitting blend of music, culture and entertainment as Zimbabwe marks the inaugural Munhumutapa Day, with performers using their acts to complement broader celebrations of the country’s history, identity and heritage.
