LEG spinner Brandon Mavuta bagged an impressive five-wicket haul as the Zimbabwe Emerging cricket side crushed their South African counterparts by eight wickets with 43 overs to spare in the fifth and final one-day match in Pretoria yesterday.
Mavuta’s bowling spell was instrumental for the tourists as they bowled out the hosts or a meagre 69 runs before cruising to 70/2 in just seven overs.
The win, however, came a little bit too late as the South Africa Emerging side won the series 3-2. The Zimbabwe side had a frustrating run, overall.
Despite winning the opener, they lost three games in succession during the tour to cede control of the five-game series to the hosts. In yesterday’s big win, the Zimbabwe Emerging team’s bowling was expensive as extras, made up of 20 wides and two leg byes, contributed 22 runs to the South Africans’ total of 69 runs.
The hosts moved from 17-0 in the fourth over to 69 all out in the 20th over.
The South African innings’ top score came from opener Valintine Kitime, who made 24 off 45 balls. This was followed by the extras from the Zimbabwe Emerging as the rest of the batting contributed between 0 (three batsmen) and seven runs.
Mavuta, who did not give away any extras, led the Zimbabwe Emerging attack with five wickets for 26 runs in seven overs while Victor Nyauchi took three for 23 in seven overs. Faraz Akram claimed two for 18 in six overs.
In reply, Zimbabwe Emerging reached 63-0 before losing two wickets in successive balls of the sixth over.
Tinashe Kamunhukamwe fell for 32 off 21 balls after 5.5 overs while number three Tanunurwa Makoni fell for a golden duck.
Tadiwanashe Marumani was unbeaten on 34 from 19 while Wesley Madhevere was one not out as Zimbabwe Emerging crossed the line on exactly seven overs, going at a run rate of 10.4.
