DIVISION Two outfit, Mawabeni FC are eyeing to take it a step further by gaining promotion to the First Division after an impressive campaign in the ZIFA Matabeleland South Division Pool A League.
They are keen to follow the footsteps of Stars United from the same district which played in Division One and gave a good account of themselves in the 1990s.
The community run Mawabeni side are sitting two points clear at the top of the standings with the league drawing to an end.
Having played 13 games, Mawabeni has managed to amass 29 points, winning nine matches while sharing the spoils on two occasions.
They have suffered two defeats with one being a walkover after they missed their game due to a car break down.
Their latest quest for promotion came after a hard fought 3-2 victory over Delete and have a tough task ahead this coming weekend with fellow promotion chasing side, ZRP Gwanda at home on Sunday.
Their home venue is Mawabeni Grounds.
They won the first leg 1-0. As an ambitious side, Mawabeni, who were founded in 2019, are also looking for sponsorship.
“Our goal is to be promoted to Division One next season. At the moment we don’t have any sponsors and as such the community of Mawabeni have been contributing towards food and transport for our team. In the last two games, Nkomazana Syndicate Mine offered a truck to ferry supporters from Mawabeni to Gwanda,” said Mbesuma Nkomazana.
The league they are competing in is an 11-team competition with five teams vying for the top honours.
