BULAWAYO Mayor Councillor Martin Moyo has encouraged residents to give to the less privileged as a way of showing gratitude to God for making it through the year.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Mayor Clr Gift Banda on Tuesday night during the Carols by Candlelight event, Clr Moyo said it was everyone’s responsibility to bless those around them.
The event was held at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre to mark the beginning of the festive season in the city.
Entry was by donation and the proceeds will be distributed to children’s charities in the city.
Clr Moyo said, “As we sing with the Christmas spirit in the air, let it be a signal not to forget our brothers, sisters, children and grandparents in the different institutions who are waiting on us to stretch our hands. Let’s dig deep into our pockets and closets to make their Christmas a happy time”.
The mayor thanked residents who made contributions in cash and kind.
“When the three wise men went to meet baby Jesus, they carried with them gold, frankincense and myrrh. Today you have followed in the same footsteps by bringing donations for those in need in our society and I thank you,” said Clr Moyo.
Providing music at the event was the Zimbabwe Academy of Music and choir groups from the Bulawayo Central Methodist Church, Joyful Noise and Girls College.
Some of the songs performed at the event include Joy to the World, While the Shepherds Watched and We Three Kings.
The city’s public relations officer, Nesisa Mpofu, said festivities at the Centenary Park would kick off on Friday next week, not this Friday as earlier reported.
She said there are other events lined for Christmas that would be held at Mpopoma and Nketa suburbs respectively from Friday December 11 to Sunday December 13, 2015.
“Various artistes have been lined up to provide entertainment throughout the three day programme. On Friday festive lights will be switched on accompanied by a display of fire works by fireworld,” Mpofu said.
