Maziwisa’s kiss of life

WHAWHA FC coach Lloyd “Samaita” Mutasa has given forgotten former Premiership Golden Boot winner Nelson Maziwisa a kiss of life.

The 2012 top marksman and Soccer Star of the Year finalist signed for relegation threatened Whawha last month from FC Platinum where he had fallen out of favour.

The 29-year-old Maziwisa, who banged 18 goals for Shabanie Mine during the 2012 season, has not kicked a Premiership ball this season.

Mutasa – who coached Maziwisa at Kiglon back in 2010 before reuniting with the striker at FC Platinum in 2013 – is confident of working the striker back to sharpness.

“Maziwisa is a proven striker. I worked with him at Kiglon when we won promotion into the top flight in 2010 and we met again at FC Platinum. I have been paying close attention to him ever since and I can tell you he still possesses those killer instincts of a predator.

“Yes, he hasn’t been playing regularly over the past two seasons, his level right now is lower than that of the Maziwisa who won the Golden Boot in 2012 but I can work him back to that level.

“Our defence has improved in the past four games and what we were lacking was the cutting edge upfront. That, I am sure, Maziwisa can add.

“He has shaken off the knee injury that has sidelined him from action for a long period and you can see he is eager to rekindle his career,” Mutasa said.

Just three years ago, Maziwisa was the toast of the top flight league and attracted interest from giants Dynamos and Highlanders, with some offers coming from South Africa.

However, the striker has not lost hope and insists defenders can write him off at their own peril.

“There are ups and downs in one’s career but one has to solider on. I have spent over seven months without playing a competitive match, that is a lot of time but I have been training hard all along.

“I do not want to talk much now but what I can promise is that once I start scoring, it will be goals galore once more,” said Mazi
