AT eight, he stunned his family and fellow congregants by exhibiting talent beyond his age as a drummer.
Largely self-taught, his musical calling made him a favourite of many.
Now 24, his maturity in understanding music production and direction is beyond his generation.
So exceptional is the lad that he easily caught the attention of Joseph Madziyire who roped him in Zimpraise Kids Choir, years back.
In his journey, he has been working closely with some of the household names in gospel circles.
His stakes are rising with each passing day.
A humble and talented bloke he is, Douglas Mazumbo is our rare “gem of the week” destined for stars.
Narrating his journey, Mazumbo owes his success to the Christian background.
“I was born on January 5, 2000, being the third born in a family of four children. I went to Budiriro 3 Primary School, then Budiriro 1 Secondary School for my high school.”
“Musically, I was largely self-taught because I didn’t start music,” he says.
Revisiting his formative years in the industry, Mazumbo vividly remembers the journey he walked.
“I started playing drums at the age of eight, I taught myself the piano when I was 12, (Form One) and then fell in love with the keyboard. I discovered my talent for music production, composition and music directing as a teen. Joseph Madziyire discovered the skills and made me a band director at Zimpraise Kids,” recalls Mazumbo.
Taking stock of his career, Mazumbo has special moments in his career he singles out as major achievements.
“Becoming a music director at a young age, arranging and directing music for renowned artistes and musicians for example Minister Michael Mahendere, Eleana Makombe, Psalmist Hubert, Zimpraise and travelling around the world are some of my achievements.”
A fulltime musician, Mazumbo is yet to find a fallback plan but remains happy.
“In the morning, I do music production and composition afternoon sessions are meant for rehearsals and meetings.
“In the evening, I do music education and personal projects,” says Mazumbo as he outlines his daily routine.
The easy-going producer salutes him role model for shaping his career.
“My role models are Mark Madzinga , Nqubeko Mbatha; they inspire me with their diverse musical expertise, production skills and dedication to music education. Then I also adore John Makombe’s intergrity and determination when it comes to music. This has made me remain focused and experienced.”
The multi-tasking Mazumbo shares his job responsibilities as a music director.
“These comprise overseeing music production and composition, collaborating with artistes and producers, managing music projects and budgets, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality music content.”
Like any other practitioner, Mazumbo says defaulters give him headaches.
“Honestly, one of my biggest challenges is the constant struggle to get fairly compensated for my work as a music producer and director.
“I always think some artistes and clients underestimate my value due to my young age, assuming I will work for cheap or even for free.”
“This mentality is sadly prevalent in the music industry where producers and directors are often seen as expendable.”
He adds: “Furthermore, the music industry’s money problems make things even harder. There is always less money available, and it’s not clear how it’s being shared. “This makes it tough for creatives like me to keep working. It’s sad when our work is not valued, considering we are the backbone of the industry, bringing artistes’ visions to life.
“I wish more artistes and clients understood the worth of our expertise and the importance of fair compensation for our services.”
Besides being undervalued, Mazumbo is proud of some of the musicians he has worked with.
“I have worked with Janet Manyowa , Everton Mlalazi, Zimpraise, Eleana Makombe, and Minister Micheal Mahender.”
“I adapt to each artiste’s unique style and creative approach. I also use effective communication and project management skills to balance differences,” he explains.
Mazumbo believes originality has made him unique.
“What makes me different from others is my faith. As a Christian, I prioritise God in every aspect of my work, even in the smallest details. I believe this brings a unique perspective and humility to my craft.
“Versatility is another issue because I have had the privilege of working with diverse artistes across various genres. This versatility allows me to adapt and bring out the best in each artist,” says Mazumbo.
The producer also values the power of collaborative approaches.
“Unlike some music directors, I don’t believe in imposing my will on the artiste.
“Instead, I work closely with them to understand their vision and bring it to life. My role is to interpret and enhance their creative direction, not dictate it.
“I also see myself as a facilitator and enabler, rather than a dictator. My goal is to empower the artist and help them achieve their goals, rather than seeking to impose my own ego or agenda,” says the young lad who believes in the power of prayer.
Outlining his vision for the next five years, Mazumbo has great ideas.
“I would like to establish myself as a leading music director and producer, expand my music education and workshop initiatives and continue to work with top artistes, and push the boundaries of music production and composition.”
