A MAN has been arrested for possessing 6,5 kilogrammes of mbanje that was found in 12 bags at his house.
Richard Magwenzi, 34, of Mzilikazi suburb in Bulawayo appeared before Western Commonage Magistrate Tancy Dube for illegal possession of $6,500-worth of mbanje and 700ml of Broncleer cough syrup, which is not registered in the country.
He pleaded guilty to both charges.
Magwenzi told the court that he traded in illegal substances because he needed to make money to fend for his family as he was unemployed.
“I admit that I was found in possession of mbanje and unregistered medicine. I wanted to sell it and get money so that I take care of my aging mother, my kids together with my late brother’s children,” said Magwenzi.
He was remanded in custody to today for sentencing.
Prosecuting, Admire Zvongouye, told the court that on Wednesday last week, at around 9PM, police officers received information that Magwenzi was in possession of mbanje before raiding his home.
