Mbanje earns man jail term

A 21-year-old man who pleaded guilty to possessing 0,628 kilogrammes of dagga was yesterday jailed for seven months. Shawn Tekedai appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Bianca Makwande.He was facing a possession of dagga charge.Ms Makwande sentenced Tekedai to 10 months in jail and suspended three months for five years on condition of good behaviour.

In passing sentence, Ms Makwande said the offence was aggravated because Tekedai was selling dagga to the society, endangering people. The court heard that the dagga has a street value of $30.

Prosecuting, Ms Audrey Chogumaira told the court that on October 13, this year Zimbabwe Republic Police Protection Intelligence Unit in Harare received information that Tekedai was selling dagga at the intersection of Abercorn and Kaguvi streets in Harare.

Police officers spotted Tekedai, who was carrying a brown backpack and introduced themselves.

They searched him and recovered dagga stashed in a black plastic bag in the backpack.

He was subsequently arrested.

The dagga weighed 0,628 kilogrammes.
