A 79-YEAR-OLD man arrested for possessing 76,52 kilogrammes of marijuana worth $6 000 at Mbare Musika has been granted bail. Peter Nyamitambo was ordered by magistrate Ms Shelly Zvenyika to pay $100 bail and to reside at the address he gave to the police. He was also ordered not to interfere with witnesses. Ms Zvenyika said Nyamitambo is an elderly citizen and was of ill-health, therefore, the State would not suffer any prejudice if he was released on bail. However, Passmore Makombe (20) and Charles Tawe (36), who are jointly charged with Nyamitambo were remanded in custody. Ms Zvenyika said the two were not proper candidates for bail as they were likely to abscond.

“The State’s fears are reasonable as these two are likely to flee because of the seriousness of the offence they are facing.

“The pair might fail to stand trial so it will be best if they are remanded in custody,” she said. The three are being charged with unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs. They were remanded to July 13 for trial.

Allegations are that on July 5, Makombe arrived from Nyanga with 76,52 kg of dagga and left it in a Mwayera bus.

The court heard that Makombe made arrangements with Nyamitambo whom he gave a bag of dagga. Nyamitambo allegedly gave Tawe a bag to take to Chitungwiza rank but he was intercepted by the police who then arrested him. Nyamitambo and Makombe were later arrested after they claimed ownership of the other bags.
