Members of the original Mbira DzeNharira will tomorrow come together for a show at La Rouge in Westgate.
Tendai “Samaita” Gahamadze, Tichaona “Nyamasvisva” MaAfrica, Tanganeropa Crispen Mujongondi and Micah Munemo will be on the same stage for the second time.
They performed at the same venue last week and left lasting impressions. The response they got has led them to go for another show tomorrow.
Until last week, the mbira quartet had never done a complete show together. They used to share the stage and perform a few songs jointly, but this time they will spend the whole night belting out their old tunes.
Their songs that include “Ndoenda KwaAmbuya”, “Matendera”, “Zvowoenda Harare”, “Madhunamutuna” and “Toputika Neshungu” are usually popular when the gwenyambiras go down memory lane.
Mbira music lovers love the old memories. They know that when the four gwenyambiras are on one stage, the gods unleash their spiritual powers.
The four now lead separate groups. Samaita still leads Mbira DzeNharira, Nyamasvisva has Mawungira eNharira, Munemo fronts Ninga DzeNharira while Mujongondi leads Vawuki Muchirorodziva.
La Rouge manager Spencer Sahumani said they are bringing the group back for another Friday of traditional vibes.
“The response that we got last week was fantastic. Mbira DzeNharira have a permanent slot here and last week Samaita decided to work with the original members of the group.
Fans enjoyed the set and asked that we have another show of the original members this Friday,” said Sahumani.
Samaita said it was good to revisit the old days.
“We had never done this since our split. We used to share the stage as separate groups and we would do a few songs together.
We had not gone for a whole show as the original group. It is great that we are all pursuing the music we love most with our separate groups. The ultimate goal is to preserve our culture through mbira,” said Samaita.
