Bulawayo’s fast-rising comedian Mbongeni Ignatius Ndlovu is set to represent the city of Kings at the forthcoming National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) as he has received his first ever national nomination for Outstanding Stand-Up Comedian.
The awards will be held on March 3 in Harare.
Ndlovu is nominated with Nigel Maritinyu (Nigel Slick Pastor) and Mukudzei Majoni (King Kandoro).
To him the NAMA nomination is not just a personal achievement – it is also a testament to the ever growing comedy scene in Bulawayo.
The funny ace man expressed his gratitude to those who have supported him along the way.
“I am grateful to everyone who believes in me and supports my craft. It’s not easy to be recognised on a national level hence I would love to send love to everyone from Bulawayo and beyond who has supported me.
“I really have my city at heart and I hope this nomination inspires upcoming comedians from my city and shows them that anything is possible,” said Ndlovu.
Mbongeni, who is also affectionately known as the “Covid Comic,” has come a long way in the comedy game as he started making jokes in 2020.
The jester is a lucky man as for him to be a polished diamond he is, he was polished and mentored by the best in the comedy game including MaForty, Ntando Van Moyo, Chick Aljoy, and T1wanda.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including convincing his family to accept his unconventional career path, Ndlovu persevered and has since performed at various high-profile events, including the Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo and the KwaNtuthu Comedy Festival.
He is reigning Outstanding Comedian in Bulawayo, cemented by his win at the previous edition of the Bulawayo Arts Awards.
