THE Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe and Republican Unitary Enterprise Centre for Examinations and Tests in Health Service of Belarus (RUE-CETH) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the basis of the already excellent relationship between the two countries.

The signing ceremony was held yesterday in Minsk, the Belarusian capital with attendees being key representatives from both organisations, reflecting the mutual commitment to advancing healthcare standards and regulatory excellence. This significant agreement marks a new chapter of collaboration and cooperation between Zimbabwe and Belarus.

In a statement, MCAZ director-general Mr Richard Rukwata said the MoU will foster more innovations in the pharmaceutical industry.

“The MoU establishes a framework for joint efforts in enhancing regulatory standards, ensuring the safety and efficacy of medicines, and fostering innovation in the pharmaceutical sector,” reads the statement.

“This partnership aims to leverage the strengths and expertise of both MCAZ and RUE-CETH to promote public health and improve access to high-quality medical products.”

Mr Rukwata said the MoU built upon the strong historical and friendly relations between Zimbabwe and Belarus.

“This partnership will not only enhance the safety and efficacy of medicines in both countries, but also promote the development of the pharmaceutical industry, and create opportunities for investment and trade,” he said.

Mr Rukwata indicated that the partnership is paramount in capacity building between the two countries.

“The partnership is an important milestone in building capacity within the regulators in both countries and ensuring world-class medicines and health products regulation for the benefit of citizens,” he said.

“This collaboration will enable us to share knowledge, enhance regulatory practices, and ultimately benefit the citizens of both countries by ensuring access to safe and effective medicines”.

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament, The Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act, as a successor to the 1969 Drugs Control Council and the Zimbabwe Regional Drug Control Laboratory.

MCAZ is responsible for protecting public and animal health by ensuring that accessible medicines and allied substances and medical devices are safe, effective and of good quality through enforcement and adherence to standards by manufacturers and distributors.
