MIDLANDS Christian College, or MCC as it is popularly known, is a Gweru based school which is leading in the field of secondary education. Six of its pupils received awards for outstanding results in the 2014 Cambridge International Examinations. The pupils scooped the awards at the recently held Cambridge Awards Ceremony at Meikles Hotel in Harare.
Claudius Mutevhe, 16, who was in Form Three when he sat for the November 2014 IGCSE Combined Science examination through the flexibility of the MCC programmes and hard work, was the top student in Zimbabwe.
Mutevhe attributed his success to hard work and thanked the institution for providing them with adequate resources.
“I just don’t know what to say now. I’m very excited and I must confess that this is all a result of dedication, commitment and hard work,” he said.
Strength was also seen in Combined Science with Form Four pupil Tendai Mutamba receiving the award for being the top in Zimbabwe for the IGCSE Combined Science June session.
Mutamba also thanked everyone who played a part in his success.
Meanwhile, outgoing head boy, Kumbirai Sibanda, and outgoing head girl, Kudzai Chinyanganya, also showed excellence when they received awards for being the top in “A” level Mathematics in Zimbabwe in June, and the top in “A” Level Geography in Zimbabwe respectively.
Sibanda, who has since been awarded a scholarship by Florida State University and Chinyanganya, balanced their academic work and the responsibilities of being student leaders competently.
Munyaradzi Chaibva was top in Zimbabwe for June 2014 in AS Physics and Rumbidzai Rutsvara was top in Zimbabwe for June 2014 in Advanced Subsidiary Economics.
These students are upholding the legacy of excellence as it has become a tradition to scoop awards every year. In 2013 four students scooped six awards in the 2013 Cambridge Awards Ceremony.
As laid out in their development plan, one of the goals which MCC is committed to is that all pupils must pass Mathematics, English and Science at “O” Level.
The students must also be computer literate through the International Computer Drivers Licence programme manned by the Computer Society of Zimbabwe and a CLAIT or Cambridge Information Technology qualification.
The College attained the following in the 2014 Examinations:
The O-Level pass rate rose from 79 percent in 2013 to 88 percent in 2014. The three top “O” level students obtained at least 9As and Bs.
At A-Level the pass rate for 2014 was 100 percent with the best students achieving 20 points, that is, 4 As.
Another exciting and unique development is the pioneer Form Two class which wrote O- Level Mathematics in 2014 and obtained a 94 percent pass rate with only two candidates failing to make the grade.
This year is also significant for the College as it will see its pioneer students writing HSK examinations in Chinese.
This follows the establishment of the Confucius Classroom at Midlands Christian College operated as a project of the University of Zimbabwe Confucius Institute.
The pupils are enjoying the privilege of learning the Chinese language and culture, and are being given the opportunity to have an edge over their peers in the market place when they eventually apply for jobs. The Chinese language is fast becoming an international medium of communication.
Tanaka Tafirenyika, who completed his studies in 2014, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars based on his outstanding academic results.
This prestigious society was founded by Claes Nobel, whose family established the world-renowned Nobel Prizes.
There is also a strong remedial department which crafts programmes relevant to the individual needs of the learners and hopes are high that those pupils who struggle to assimilate into a conventional system will be catered for.
The ethos of individual attention and care is, however, reflected across the entire academic programmes with provision made for all types of learners to follow a curriculum best suited to them.
MCC believes that collaboration between all parties — parents, pupils and the school — is key to the development of the institution and is one of the factors that has pushed them this far.
Infrastructurally, Midlands Christian College is well equipped in the IT Department with large banks of computers available to pupils for both lessons and research in addition to the interactive technology available in most classrooms to help enhance the learning process.
