THE Zanu-PF clean sweep in Matabeleland South Province during the 31 July harmonised elections seems to have inspired people from opposition parties to join the revolutionary party. There have been a number of defections from the two MDC formations and only on Wednesday the losing MDC council candidate for ward three, Ms Lines Nyoni, surrendered her party regalia and card in the presence of scores of Zanu-PF members.

In the elections, Ms Nyoni, who belonged to the Professor Welshman Ncube formation, lost to the recently elected Gwanda Town mayor, Councillor Knowledge Ndlovu.

Welcoming Ms Nyoni to the revolutionary party, Zanu-PF provincial treasurer and former Gwanda Senator Cde Japhet Dube revealed that there were a number of people from the opposition parties who had surrendered their party cards at the party’s offices.

“We have quite a number of people who have since surrendered their cards at our offices after realising that the future of this country lies in Zanu-PF. A lot of people are coming back home and we are saying doors are open, our party is open to everyone,” said Cde Dube.

Ms Nyoni said a number of MDC supporters have indicated that they wanted to cross the floor and join Zanu-PF.
She lambasted MDC and other opposition parties for being in politics for the sake of criticising yet they had no plans to move the country forward.

“I realised that I had made a big mistake and now I am happy to be back home, to the people centred party,” said Ms Nyoni.
She said by re-joining Zanu-PF she had seen the need to build the country for future generations.
