MDC-T Masvingo provincial chairperson James Gumbi has said the opposition party has plans to cause chaos before the 2018 elections. Addressing supporters at a poorly attended rally at Chin’ai Township under Chief Munyikwa in Gutu East on Saturday, Gumbi said his party also seeks to perpetuate the suffering the people are going through so as to cause public anger against the government. He said MDC-T was planning to use unorthodox means to unseat the government after years of failing to secure the mandate to rule through elections.
He called on what he described as vigilant members of the party to take part in demonstrations that his party was planning to destabilise the government and remove Zanu-PF from power by force.
“We’ve made it clear that if there are no elections reforms, we’re not going to take part in any elections here in Zimbabwe. These meetings are part of strengthening our structures ahead of the 2018 elections provided we have reforms. By the time we reach 2018, MDC-T would be in power because we’ve an effective strategy of removing Cde Mugabe by force. We no longer need elections to remove Zanu-PF,” said Gumbi.
He said members should join hands in assisting party leader Morgan Tsvangirai to “lead the country”.
“What I know is that Tsvangirai will rule this country one day and it may not be through the ballot box. We’ll want to cause more anarchy, perpetuate the suffering of the people so that we achieve power and that should be done now. Every MDC-T member should brace for achieving power through causing civil unrest. That’s the only language Zanu-PF understands,” he said.
He urged members to rally behind Tsvangirai in the face of attacks from some countries previously thought to be supportive of him saying the former trade unionist is not yet finished.
“We should all rally behind Tsvangirai ahead of anyone in the party. We don’t take the vilification he has suffered before some of our yesteryear international allies seriously.
“Tsvangirai remains our trump card and there is no other leader whom we should pay allegiance to. To those who got the opportunity to be voted as legislators, they shouldn’t also enjoy alone,” said Gumbi.
“Leaders should also help others access better things than being selfish. That’s not our culture in the MDC-T.”
A United States of America diplomat recently took a swipe at Tsvangirai for boycotting by-elections held last month, describing the decision as ill-advised on the part of the trouble-riddled party.
