GWERU Mayor Councillor Hamutendi Kombayi his deputy Councillor Artwell Matyorauta and three other councillors who have been on suspension after they defied the MDC-T position on mayoral elections have been cleared by the party’s disciplinary committee.Councillors Kombayi, Matyorauta, Farai Muza, Moses Marecha and Tawanda Magidi appeared before the MDC-T disciplinary committee last month after they defied the party directive to vote Clr Charles Chikozho as Gweru Mayor and Clr Kenneth Sithole as his deputy.
Sources within MDC-T told Chronicle yesterday that the disciplinary committee has since recommended that the five be cleared of the charge.
“It was agreed that the five defied the party directive on the election of Gweru Mayor. It was also agreed that in spite of their defiance, the five voted for MDC-T candidates as opposed to the situation that prevailed in other councils, hence should be given the benefit of doubt and be cleared,” said the source.
Clr Kombayi yesterday said: “That suspension is now water under the bridge. We should not waste our energies commenting over that. Let’s talk about how the new council is doing to improve service delivery in our city of progress.
Let’s discuss issues of development.”
MDC-T Midlands south provincial spokesperson Mr James Tsuro said he was yet to receive an official communication on Clr Kombayi and his colleagues’ fate when contacted yesterday.
“We only heard that through rumours that they were cleared but we are yet to receive an official communication from the national executive. As the provincial executive, we were the ones who recommended the suspension of the five and if the national executive decides otherwise, we expect a formal communication,” he said.
MDC-T national spokesperson Mr Douglas Mwonzora was not answering his mobile phone.
