MDC-T wins 29 wards in Bulawayo council elections

MDC-T has won all the 29 wards in Bulawayo City Council in the harmonised elections with 17 new faces coming on board. According to results released by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec), the MDC-T candidates  won all the wards while independent candidates lost dismally.Two former MDC-T councillors Ms Thembeni Khoza and Mr Phinias Ndlovu, who lost in the party’s primary elections, contested as independent candidates and lost. Ms Khoza lost to Ms Lilian Mlilo in Ward 12, while Mr Ndlovu lost to Mr Macdonald Chunga in Ward 14.

In Ward 2, where the former Deputy Mayor Mr Amen Mpofu was the councillor, Ms Sithabile Mataka won the election and beat three other contestants.

Mr Paul Malaba of MDC lost Ward 4 to Mr Silas Chigora  while in Ward 5, where Dr John Ferguson of MDC was the councillor,  Mr Gift Banda beat two other contestants.

Former councillor for Ward 6, Ms Jennifer Bent, lost the ward during the party’s primary elections and the ward has since been won by Ms Thabitha Ngwenya, who beat four other contestants.

Ms Shilla Masonda beat two other contestants in Ward 8. Ms Masondo contested in the ward after Clr Mackenzie Sibanda died before the party’s primary elections. In Ward 11, Mr Nduna Dladla of MDC lost to Mr Pilate Moyo, while Ms Gladys Masuku beat three other contestants in Ward 10, where the former councillor Mr Prince Dube contested and lost as an independent candidate for the National Assembly in Emakhandeni constituency.

Former councillor for Ward 15 Mr Israel Mabaleka contested as a National Assembly candidate on an MDC ticket in Luveve constituency and lost to Mr Reggie Moyo.

In Ward 16 Mr Nephat Sibanda beat four other contestants. The ward had no councillor after Clr Solomon Ncube died in office.
In the previous council,  23 were from MDC-T while six were from MDC.
