ZIMBABWE swimmers gave a good account of themselves at the sixth Fina World Junior Championships in the United States with some strong performances that saw them improving their personal records.

The swimming championships, which began on August 18, ended yesterday in Indianapolis where Liam O’Hara, Liam Davies and Chase Onorati represented Zimbabwe.

The three young swimmers struggled to go beyond the heats in most of the events they participated in, but managed to record some impressive times.

Bulawayo-based O’Hara beat his personal best time in the 200m freestyle, finishing in two minutes 2.22 seconds to better his previous time of two minutes 2.24 seconds.

Onorati also beat his 54.17 seconds in the 50m freestyle, finishing in 54. 11 seconds, while Davies recorded his best time in the 50m breaststroke, which he did in 30.50 seconds.

Matabeleland Amateur Swimming Board chairperson Moreen Nyamutsamba was, however, not reading much into the medals’ table.

“These are very young boys and they will gain a lot of experience from the championships. This was a chance for the boys to get exposure they need going forward. The positive thing is that these boys managed to record personal best times, which is a step forward as they look to qualify for the Olympics,” said Nyamutsamba.

Some of the events the swimmers took part in include the 200m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle.
