The media industry is appealing to Government for financial support to remain afloat and operate at full capacity in a rapidly changing digital landscape where traditional business models are struggling to survive.
This emerged yesterday when stakeholders in the media industry appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Information, Media and Broadcasting Services at the new Parliament Building.
Zimpapers (1980) Limited chief executive officer, Mr Pikirayi Deketeke, said the media industry “is in serious trouble, whether in Zimbabwe or the region”.
“There is a migration to digital media, yet hundreds of students are enrolling in journalism schools, expecting to get employment from our newspapers and broadcasting stations, which is unlikely to happen since many of them are beginning to close down,” he said.
ZBC acting chief executive officer Mr Charles Munganasa called for the recapitalisation of the national broadcaster.
